Tyler Kubara joined the Canberra Brave in 2015, commencing the Kubara and Brave legacy we know in 2024.  Scoring 23 points in his 25 appearances for the Brave throughout the season, Tyler remains a strong performer on the ice, and a valued teammate and leader in the locker room.

FINALS NEVER IN DOUBT

Yet another Brave representative on the national team at the start of the season, Tyler reiterates what has been said all season - that despite the slow start, the Brave’s appearance at finals was never in doubt.  “Going away with the national team just shows how deep the Brave roster is with the number of national representatives on the team, but it also hurts the Brave in those early games where we're missing five or six guys and the league still going."

"Since I started, we've always been top of the ladder, we've made finals every year and are kind of just expected to win. But this year was a little bit different, we had a bit of a slow start, but we always believed that we were going to come back.  I remember losing a handful of games at the start of the year and just looking around the room still saying to the guys we're still in this, and talking to guys on other teams, saying we’re still going to be there for finals at the end."

"The boys were still competitive in those early games too. A lot of them could have gone either way and I think it was a really good experience for the younger guys who were coming up through the ranks. Now they’ve seen what it takes to put those wins together.  Even though we were at the bottom of the ladder, we still had that belief and the confidence that we were going to come back and start winning a few games. So, I guess the expectations were the same, but it was still hard to be losing game after game. We always knew we were going to come back.”

LONG DISTANCE COMMITMENT
Moving to the Central Coast for work in 2022, Tyler has travelled for Brave commitments for the last two seasons, proving that he will always be Brave at heart. This experience, while changing his involvement at Brave, has only reiterated his commitment to the team and his own development as a player.  “You’ve got to do more in your own time to stay fit, whether that's going to the gym, getting ice time here and there when you can. We (Casey & Tyler) feel like we miss out on a few little things as far team dinners, team workouts and that sort of thing but whenever we are here, I feel like we push ourselves more than what we would if we were here full time."

"The weekly training and games where we do come down, we're trying to prove to ourselves and the rest of the team why we should still be here.  But then I think it goes to show just how important the Brave is to us and how professional the organisation is in the fact that we are living a few hours away, but we'd still rather make the drive to Canberra than play for anyone else.”

THE BEST STILL TO COME
Tyler has had a strong season, continuing to impress week on week and securing a consistent spot in the first line alongside Austin Cangelosi and Jake Ratcliffe.  “Personally, I think it has been a good year. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been working on different things. When I first started with the Brave, I had a little bit of a different role.  I was younger, I was playing on the third line, and you sort of have a different role where, even though you are helping out on the score sheet every now and then, you're not expected to get a goal every night. But even those years where I was playing on the third line, I was sometimes playing my best hockey, it’s just a different role.”

“This year and last year I've had a little bit of a different role where I'm getting a little bit more power play time on that first or second line where you're going up against other teams’ first line. You're expected to shut them down and then also counter their offense, get more goals than them etc. Besides that, I feel like I had a strong off season coming into this season, preparing for and then going away with the Aussie team, you're on the ice twice a day. So, when I came back and stepped straight into things I felt like I had a little bit of an upper edge, being on the ice more than I usually would. And then, just working on other parts of my game that I haven't really worked on in previous seasons like agility, speed and flexibility, rather than strength all the time. So that might have something to do with it.”

“Even though I am sometimes on the score sheet, it still doesn't feel like I'm playing my best hockey. I’ve still got some room to move and hopefully keep getting better.”

THE RACE TO SUNDAY

Tyler’s final comments on heading into finals weekend are simple.  “It will be tough. It's obviously a big advantage finishing in that first spot and skipping the Friday night game.  As far as the preparation goes, you've just got to be ready to go three games in a row. It does feel like a big mountain to climb, but it is just three games in a row, three days in a row. We will try and prepare as much as we can but we've got everything around us that we need - doctors, physios, nutrition, massage, everything like that. We’ll be ready to go.”
