Pitt hat-trick key in Brave win over Bears |

A Scott Pitt hat-trick helped the CBR Brave put behind them a week of off-ice distraction to cruise to a 6-3 victory over the Sydney Bears in Canberra on Saturday night. Almost a week since CBR Brave management issued a media release notifying of the immediate coaching restructure, most fans were uncertain of how Josh Unice would transition his skills between the pipes to the stands. "Change can always go one way or the other this time it worked for them," Bears coach Vlad Rubes said. Both goalies were kept busy as the first period was a see-sawing affair with possession and shots as both sides played to keep their season alive. Sydney Bears were hoping for a repeat result from their last encounter in Canberra, but it was Scott Pitt who opened the scoring in the eighth minute as he battled onto an up-ice pass from Kelly Geoffrey and was good enough to beat Bears goalie Kamil Jarina. Matt Harvey continued his goal scoring form since coming back to the AIHL as he made it 2-0 with two minutes remaining as he struck from deep, making it his third goal from five appearance this season. The Sydney Bears came out in the second period with even more intensity as they increased their physicality on the Brave, and had a number of opportunities to get onto the score sheet but were unable to beat Brave goalkeeper Aleksi Toivonen. In turn, Jarina kept the Bears in the hunt denying several Brave opportunities throughout the 2nd period. The Brave finally found a way through Jarina, as Pitt - once again assisted by Geoffrey - showed patience as he was good enough to slide one underneath the Bears goalie to increase the lead 3-0. The Brave were able to take advantage of the Sydney Bears ill discipline as Stephen Blunden scored a goal from the point with just over two minutes remaining in the middle stanza. The Bears responded in less than a minute as Ales Padelek finally got the Bears on the scoreboard, further confirming the Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre as a happy hunting ground following his hat-trick in the last start, giving the Bears a sniff at the final break with the score at 4-1. Five minutes into the third period, Blunden somehow managed to squeeze one in from within a congested goalmouth making it 5-1. Chances went begging for both teams as Sydney continued to play as if the scores were much closer, but with fourth place up for grabs nothing was won just yet. With six minutes remaining, Scott Pit added a few more hats to his collection as he scored a short-handed goal against the run of play to seal his third for the match. Although five goals behind, the Bears gave themselves some hope with just under five minutes remaining with Lee Turner, fresh off the plane from a successful Inline Championship, slotting two goals within 12 seconds to give the Bears hope of a miracle. However, it was too little too late as the Brave skated away with the 6-3 win. Brave head coach Josh Unice was pleased with his teams effort in his first game in control. "We were up 6-1 at one point, I thought that maybe we were too cute towards the end and we let in a couple of goals there towards the end,” Unice said. “But at the end of the game we were still victorious and it’s nice to walk out with all three points." "Obviously with the team we have on paper, it's not good to be 10-11, and now we're 11-11 and we're back in the top four. So it's good and the guys have handled it great and they've done everything that I've asked from them." On the Bears side, coach Rubes highlighted his side’s slow start in the first allowing the Brave to seize momentum in the early stages. "I think they started pretty hard,” Rubes said. “They were faster they were quicker on the puck and we were always a step behind. They scored their first goal on our power play which was a set back for us." "Even we played better in the second period when it was 4-0 and it took us a long time to score our first goal. I just think that their top players played better than our top guys." Sydney Bears have a chance for redemption as they play host to the CBR Brave next Saturday, 25 July at the Penrith Ice Palace. |
