Ross the Boss! CBR Brave appoints new Assistant Coach

The CBR Brave have announced a key addition to their coaching staff for season 2019, with Max Ross joining head coach Rob Starke in piloting the Brave’s championship defence.

Ross, who is from Lethbridge, Alberta in Canada, has recently swapped his pads for a tracksuit, and comes to the Brave with a strong playing history after a junior career as a defenseman with the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the WHL, a stint with the University of Calgary Dinos and his most recent role as the captain of Gap in the Ligue Magnus in France.

His playing days came to an end after an injury prior to the 2018-19 season but he had been looking for a way to stay connected to the game. So, instead of coming to the Brave Cave as a gun defenceman, he spoke with head coach Rob Starke about a coaching opportunity instead.

Arriving in Canberra in March, Ross said he is looking forward to the new chapter.

“I’m looking forward to learning the game from the other side of the bench and being part of a proven winning culture here in Canberra.”

“It will be an exciting new challenge for me but I can't wait to get started.”

Head Coach Rob Starke is confident that the qualities Ross will bring to the Brave will continue to give the team an edge.

“Max had great success as a player overseas and I expect his transition to coaching to be seamless.”

“His experience as a major junior, university and professional ice player will have a strong impact on the Brave, and our players will benefit enormously from his extensive experience this season. He also understands the importance of team culture and will provide terrific support to the team and staff.”

After being part of the CBR Brave’s inaugural championship team, previous assistant coaches Mike Sargeant and Gord Cockell will not be returning to the coaching staff but the Brave would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their time and effort during the 2018 season.

The challenge as the hunted in 2019, after winning the Goodall Cup in 2018 will be strong, and the new season means the desire is no less than it was previously. Starke believes that taking coaching to a new level is part of the answer.

“Winning the Goodall Cup last season was a tremendous accomplishment for the CBR Brave but this is a new season and we have the same desire to win another championship. Max’s ice hockey knowledge, modern approach and fresh views will help build on our recent success.”
